The Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust was shocked and horrified at the RSPCA’s decision to no longer support Companion Dog Shows or Kennel Club Licensed Events. The Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust makes it unreservedly clear, that it will continue to support Companion Dog Shows, The Kennel Club and the Dog Show World. It WILL NOT under any circumstances cancel or withdraw from any of its planned Kennel Club Licensed Dog Shows. It is the view of the Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust that the RSPCA’s decision will only damage the incredible amount of work in the area of Pedigree Dog Health & Welfare that has been achieved in the last couple of years. The Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust supports and thanks The Kennel Club and its experts for their significant contribution to pedigree dog health and their overwhelming drive to eradicate hereditary defects from pedigree dogs.
The Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust is committed to promoting responsible dog ownership and breeding and the health of purebred dogs. The trust has supported and backed the “Fit For Function, Fit For Life” campaign being run by The Kennel Club and has embraced the revised Breed Standards which address specifically breed health. The trust feels that the main way to change the breeding practices of a very small minority of irresponsible dog breeders is in the competition arena, and those who may be inclined to reward unfavourable breeding practices. To this end the Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust in April 2010, committed funding to host a full set of the Dog Show Judges Training Scheme Seminars and exams during 2010/2011. A high emphasis during these seminars and exams will be that judges must only reward fit and healthy specimens in the show ring, which are apparently free from obvious health conditions or faults. It is also important, not to simply alienate breeders and show exhibitors, but instead to take action to encourage them to take part in trust events, training and education schemes. It is only by engaging with them and working with them, that the trust can positively promote responsible dog breeding.
As an independent registered charity the Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust will continue to work with a great emphasis on Health & Welfare of dogs cross breed and pedigree. The Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust continues to work with its veterinary advisers in making decisions on matters of policy, events, shows and activities. The Companion Dog Shows run and supported by the Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust provide an incredibly positive platform for the trust to reach the wider dog owning public and engage with all breeders, owners and further the trusts work in promoting responsible dog ownership and responsible breeding. The Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust will continue to appoint at its shows, reputable, considerably experienced dog show judges, who will continue to be briefed on the importance of Pedigree Dog Health & Welfare.
It must also be added that fundraising revenue that the Central Bedfordshire Canine Trust receives from Companion Dog Shows, gets put back into the trusts schemes and initiatives including the trusts “Health & Welfare Fund” and School & Youth Group Visits & Education Schemes. The loss of such fundraising revenue would seriously impact the work of the trust in the areas of dog health & welfare, and educating the next generation of dogs owners and breeders in Central Bedfordshire.
